Why use BOP insecticide?

Insects such as ants are merely a nuisance, travelling indoors in their search for food. Other insects such as mosquitoes, flies and cockroaches are not so harmless and may carry diseases. Female mosquitoes require blood to develop their eggs. To acquire this blood the female mosquito feeds on humans, diseases can be transmitted during the feeding process. Some of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include:

  • Malaria: Spread by the Anopheles mosquito, the symptoms of this disease include fever, flu-like illness, nausea and vomiting. Malaria may cause anaemia (low red blood cell count), jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes) and, in some instances, death.
  • Dengue Fever: Spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the symptoms of this disease include fever, headache and severe joint and muscle pain. On rare occasions the more serious and life threatening haemorrhagic (characterised by bleeding) form of the disease occurs.

The diets of insects like flies and cockroaches include decaying (i.e. garbage) and faecal matter. Bacteria may be transferred to the insects’ legs when they land on this material or may be ingested by the insect during feeding. The insect can contaminate food when it lands or excretes waste on food.  Persons eating this contaminated food can then become ill.

Flies and cockroaches are potential vectors (carriers) of diseases such as:

  • Dysentery: An inflammation of the intestine that results in diarrhea, vomiting and fever.
  • Typhoid:  An illness that causes fever, stomach pains, fatigue, loss of appetite and a rash.
  • Gastroenteritis: An inflammation of the stomach and intestine that results in headache, fever, stomach pains, watery diarrhea and vomiting.

What kind of active substances are in BOP Insecticides?

The active ingredients (i.e. substances that kill insects) in BOP Insecticides are pyrethroids. Pyrethroids are man-made forms of pyrethrins – naturally occurring insecticides that are extracted from chrysanthemum flowers.

How do BOP Insecticides work?

BOP is a contact insecticide, this means that insects must come in direct contact with the spray or residue on a treated surface if the product is to work. BOP attacks the insect’s nervous system, affecting its motor and sensory functions. BOP contains two types of pyrethroids; knockdown and killing agents, which as their names suggest knockdown (i.e. disable) and kill insects. Synergists in the formulation increase the efficacy of these two agents.

Tested and certified effective against the following mold, viruses and bacteria:

H1N1:

This influenza virus (sometimes referred to as “swine flu”) can cause severe illness. It can be transmitted from person to person through coughing or sneezing or from a contaminated surface/object to an individual who touches said surface/object and then touches the mouth or nose.

Hepatitis A:

This virus can cause liver disease. The virus is usually spread when a person ingests fecal matter, this can occur when

  • An infected individual fails to wash their hands after using the bathroom and then touches objects or food.
  • A parent or caregiver does not properly wash their hands after changing a diaper or cleaning up the stool of an infected person.

Serratia marcescens:

These bacteria prefer damp environments and are commonly found in bathrooms (especially in tile grout, shower corners, toilets and wash basins). They can cause infection of wounds, respiratory and urinary tracts.

Aspergillus níger:

This mold is a component of mildew, it can be found in damp areas (e.g. bathroom stalls) and can trigger respiratory problems in susceptible individuals.

Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella enteritidis, Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes:

These bacteria are common causes of food borne illnesses.

Persons can become infected by eating undercooked meat/poultry or food that has been in contact with contaminated surfaces (e.g. counter tops). Infected individuals who do not wash their hands after using the bathroom can transfer the bacteria to food or other surfaces.

Staphylococcus aureus:

These bacteria may be found on the skin or in the nasal passages of healthy individuals and may be transferred to objects or surfaces. If the bacteria enter the body through breakages in the skin (e.g. a cut or scratch) reactions can range from mild (a rash) to severe (pneumonia or sepsis).

Individuals may also become infected by ingesting improperly handled or prepared foods.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa:

These bacteria are widespread in nature inhabiting soil, water, plants, animals and humans, they can be found on a variety of surfaces. They rarely cause infection in healthy individuals but those with compromised immune systems and those with skin breakages (i.e. wounds) are susceptible to infection ranging from mild (a rash) to severe (pneumonia or sepsis).

STORAGE & DISPOSAL GUIDELINES

Storage of aerosols requires your careful consideration due to the risks associated with flammable propellants and liquids contained in these products. There have been several reports of very destructive aerosol-related warehouse fires in the past and as a result, health and safety are critically important especially as it relates to the storage of aerosols.  Below is a series of established guidelines which serve to reduce the risk associated with the storage of aerosol products.

  1. Storage areas should be cool and well ventilated.

  2. Storage areas should have adequate and clear entrances and exits to enable rapid personnel evacuation in cases of emergencies.

  3. Do not store aerosols near any sources of heat.

  4. Ensure aerosols are stored more than 2 metres (6.5 ft.) away from overhead lighting.

  5. Do not store aerosols in direct sunlight.

  6. Do not allow smoking in storage areas.

  7. Immediately remove any loose aerosol cans from the floor. Loose cans on the floor can lead to personal injury and/or fire.

  8. Do not store or transport insecticide aerosols next to foods or animal feed.
  1. Do not store heavy items on top of aerosols.

  2. Ensure that products are securely stacked to avoid falling from overhead.

  3. Do not store aerosol products on damaged pallets or pallets with protruding nails/screws.

  4. Broken caps should be replaced to prevent accidental product spray-off.

  5. Remove damaged or leaking aerosols immediately and take them to a well ventilated area where there is no source of ignition. Please be reminded that aerosol propellants are heavier than air; therefore, in cases of leaking aerosols, the flammable propellant will collect in the can at the lowest point.

  6. Disposal of leaking aerosol cans should be in accordance with your local health/sanitation regulations. Please feel free to contact McBride Caribbean Ltd. for recommendations on the disposal of leaking aerosols.

  7. Do not puncture aerosol cans.

  8. Never incinerate aerosol products regardless of full or empty cans.

The above information is given in good faith, and does not imply acceptance of any liability or responsibility by McBride Caribbean Ltd for the consequences of its use or misuse in any particular circumstances.
